As you prepare your home for the holidays, do you feel like you missed something? Most of the time, many families do not notice the unwanted visitors dwelling under, in, and on their homes. With pests all around, you need to make sure you take the proper precautions to keep your loved ones safe now and in the future.

According to The Island Packet, it is not uncommon for pests to enter homes and threaten one's enjoyment of the holiday season. To solve this problem, many Beaufort County homeowners are turning to the solution of extermination. "Our phone is ringing off the hook right now," said Billy Karijanian, general manager of Critter Management on Hilton Head Island. "For us, this is one of the busiest times of year."

With temperatures growing colder, various pests are beginning an annual search for warmer living spaces, giving local pest-control agencies lots of work to do. Karijanian estimated that business picks up about 25% in the winter. In addition, mice, rats, and squirrels are especially common intruders.

"They tend to nest in attics, and we get calls every year from people who discover them when they're getting their Christmas decorations," he said. The infestation is heightened by a seasonal absence of the rodents' natural predators, according to Craig Jones of Jones Consulting and Pest Services in Beaufort.

"A lot of their cold-blooded predators, like snakes, aren't active in winter," Jones said. To help prevent an infestation, he recommended carefully monitoring a home's exterior. "A lot of people pile up leaves and mulch and keep stacks of firewood near the outside of the house. Those become great places for rodents to take shelter from nighttime predators like owls."
